Description

Bourdon Pressure Gauge

A Bourdon pressure gauge is a widely used device for measuring pressure, utilizing a Bourdon tube as the pressure-sensing element. The key features, working principle, construction, and applications are as follows:

Key Features

  • High Accuracy and Precision: Bourdon pressure gauges are known for their accuracy in both low and high-pressure applications.
  • Resistance to Vibration: These gauges can be filled with liquid (e.g., glycerin) to dampen vibrations and ensure stable readings.
  • Wide Pressure Range: Capable of measuring pressures from a few psi to over 100,000 psi depending on the tube design (C-shaped, spiral, or helical)

Working Principle

The Bourdon tube is typically a C-shaped, elliptical cross-section tube that straightens when internal pressure is applied. This change in shape causes the tube’s free end to move. This movement is transmitted through a mechanical linkage (usually a gear and pinion mechanism) to a pointer that indicates the pressure on a dial .

Construction

  1. Bourdon Tube: Made from materials like stainless steel or phosphor bronze, it is oval in cross-section and bends in a C, spiral, or helical shape.
  2. Mechanical Linkage: This includes a geared sector and pinion arrangement that amplifies the tube’s movement.
  3. Pointer and Dial: The pointer, connected to the mechanical linkage, moves over a calibrated dial to indicate pressure

Applications

  • Industrial Processes: Used in manufacturing and processing plants for fluid pressure monitoring.
  • Water Supply Systems: Ensures optimal pressure in pipelines.
  • Automotive and Aerospace: Utilized in various systems requiring precise pressure measurements.
  • Agriculture: Helps maintain pressure in sprayers and irrigation systems

Advantages

  • Simple and robust construction.
  • High accuracy for a wide range of pressures.
  • Cost-effective and reliable.
  • Continuous and clear output readings.

Disadvantages

  • Can be sensitive to shock and vibration (mitigated by liquid filling).
  • May exhibit hysteresis, affecting accuracy in dynamic conditions

When selecting a Bourdon pressure gauge, consider factors such as the required pressure range, environmental conditions, and the presence of vibrations. For applications with high vibration, liquid-filled gauges are recommended to maintain accuracy and longevity
