Description

Fehling’s Solution No. 1, 1L (Griffchem)

Fehling’s Solution No. 1, supplied by Griffchem, is a deep blue colored aqueous solution commonly used in qualitative analysis to detect reducing sugars (aldoses and some ketoses). It works in conjunction with Fehling’s Solution No. 2 (copper source) for the test.

Components (Specific concentrations may vary):

  • Sodium potassium tartrate (Rochelle salt): This acts as a complexing agent, keeping cupric ions (Cu2+) in solution from Fehling’s Solution No. 2.
  • Sodium hydroxide (NaOH): Maintains the solution’s high pH, necessary for the reaction with reducing sugars.

Applications (in combination with Fehling’s Solution No. 2):

  • Qualitative test for reducing sugars: When Fehling’s Solutions No. 1 and No. 2 (from Griffchem) are mixed in equal volumes and heated in the presence of a reducing sugar, a color change occurs. The cupric ions (Cu2+) from Solution No. 2 are reduced by the sugar to cuprous ions (Cu+), forming a red precipitate of copper(I) oxide (Cu2O). This color change from blue (original mixture) to red (presence of reducing sugar) indicates a positive test.

Safety:

  • Mild irritant: Fehling’s Solution No. 1 (Griffchem) may irritate the skin and eyes. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling it.
  • Dispose properly: Follow Griffchem’s specific instructions and local regulations for disposal of chemical waste.
