Description
Fehling’s Solution No. 2, 1L (CDH)
Fehling’s Solution No. 2, supplied by CDH Fine Chemicals, is a clear, colorless aqueous solution used in qualitative analysis to detect reducing sugars. It acts as a source of cupric ions (Cu2+) that react with these sugars in a visible way.
Components:
- Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4•5H2O): This is the primary ingredient, providing the cupric ions (Cu2+) necessary for the sugar detection reaction.
Applications (in combination with Fehling’s Solution No. 1):
- Qualitative test for reducing sugars: Fehling’s Solutions No. 1 and No. 2 are used together. When mixed in equal volumes and heated in the presence of a reducing sugar, a color change occurs. The cupric ions (Cu2+) from Solution No. 2 are reduced by the sugar to cuprous ions (Cu+), leading to the formation of a red precipitate of copper(I) oxide (Cu2O). This color change, from blue (original mixture) to red (presence of reducing sugar), signifies a positive test.
Safety:
- Mild irritant: Fehling’s Solution No. 2 (CDH) can irritate the skin and eyes. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and safety glasses when handling it.
- Copper toxicity: While the concentration of copper is likely not extremely high, improper disposal can contribute to copper accumulation in the environment. Follow CDH’s specific instructions and local regulations for disposing of chemical waste containing copper.
