Description

Fehling’s Solution NO. 2 1L L/P

Fehling’s Solution No. 2 is a clear, colorless aqueous solution used in conjunction with Fehling’s Solution No. 1 for the qualitative detection of reducing sugars. It serves as a source of cupric ions (Cu2+) which react with reducing sugars in an observable way.

Components:

  • Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4•5H2O): This is the primary component, providing the cupric ions (Cu2+) essential for the reaction.

L/P Notation:

Similar to Fehling’s Solution No. 1, the “L/P” notation likely refers to the manufacturer or supplier. The specific meaning depends on the company, and without additional information, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact source.

Applications (in combination with Fehling’s Solution No. 1):

  • Qualitative test for reducing sugars: When Fehling’s Solutions No. 1 and No. 2 are mixed in equal volumes and heated in the presence of a reducing sugar, a color change occurs. The cupric ions (Cu2+) from Solution No. 2 are reduced by the sugar to cuprous ions (Cu+), forming a red precipitate of copper(I) oxide (Cu2O). This color change from blue (original mixture) to red (presence of reducing sugar) is the basis of the test.

Safety:

  • Mild irritant: Fehling’s Solution No. 2 may irritate the skin and eyes. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling it.
  • Copper toxicity: While the concentration of copper is not exceptionally high, improper disposal can lead to copper accumulation in the environment. Dispose of it according to local regulations for chemical waste containing copper.
